Class: Practical Field 1st Aid
Length: 9am-3pm
Methods: Outdoor Workshops, Field Demonstrations & Simulations, Hiking.
Who: Be prepared to help yourself or others. This class is for anyone participating in woodland/mountain outdoor activities, i.e. Mountain Biking, Hiking, Off Road Driving, Overlanding, Camping, Emergency Responders, Rangers, Utility Crews or anyone who may find themselves in remote terrain as an individual or group. Recommended for first time learning or those looking to refresh existing skills.
What’s Covered: This outdoor class covers first-aid topics in situations where professional help is not immediately available. The class focuses on how to apply first aid to common injuries occurring in woodland/mountain terrain. Injury topics include burns, fractures, penetration wounds, head trauma, airway obstruction, stings/bites. The program was developed by a US Army Combat Medic/Emergency Nurse, Emergency Medical Professionals and NORA to focus on first aid scenarios in a wilderness setting. Each module includes a review of essential items to keep in your first aid kit and how to properly use them.
Hiking/4WD Transport: The class leverages NORA’s rugged 75-acre private training facility to immerse the student in a realistic learning environment. The training group will hike to each learning station throughout the property. A hiking alternative for students with mobility limitations is available.
Pandemic Safety: For the duration of the pandemic, all demonstrations will be performed by instructors & staff, students will not have direct physical contact with other participants. All activities are outdoors. All participants will have their temperatures checked at the start of the day and COVID waivers will need to be signed. Social distancing guidelines will be followed, and face coverings are required when participants are closer than 6′.
NOTE: This class is not endorsed by a national first aid training organization. It was developed using NORA’s award winning training approach of presentation/workshop/simulation combined with content from experienced emergency professionals. It focuses on practical first aid applications and follows generally accepted treatments for injuries including burns, lacerations, fractures, head trauma, etc. All presentations, workshops and simulations are held outdoors in the field, students need to dress appropriately for the weather.
