NORA Experience Levels

“Attended the mid-August 2-Day Off Road & Recovery Bootcamp and it was amazing! The Trager family (Scott, Susan, Alex and Sam) along with their staff (Anthony & Rich) provided a top-notch experience for us. There were 7 vehicles on the trails Saturday afternoon and each participant was treated to expert instruction and a lot of off-road fun! Every step of the way we felt extremely comfortable under the watchful eyes of Sam, Rich, and Anthony. The twilight ride was tremendous as we hit additional trails under the cloak of darkness. A truly memorable experience! Sunday’s Recovery 101 class provided very valuable information and firsthand experience on how to get your vehicle unstuck off road. I highly recommend visiting NORA. You won’t be disappointed!” -Nicholas F, TripAdvisor Aug 2025

We have many training options for all levels, with terrain from Mild To Wild!

Use this guide to match your experience level to our training and trail options…

(Level 1) Beginner  – Zero experience driving off road. From folks who never even considered it, to those who have watched countless hours of YouTube videos. We train many beginners whose vehicles are capable but never left the pavement.  Attitude ranges from folks who are not sure if this is something they will want to do, to those who want to determine whether this is a new hobby to dive into. NORA rental rigs (available in Ellenville only) are a great way to try out off-road driving before purchasing your own vehicle.

(Level 2) Advanced Beginner  – This level includes folks who have driven on the beach or dirt roads, or may have attended one or two organized off road driving events.  Attitudes range from ‘I am pretty sure I will enjoy this’ to ‘I know I want to do this and want to learn more technique and gain experience. Somewhat apprehensive about getting stuck and not certain what to do if that happens.’

(Level 3) Competent  – These drivers are confident in their experience driving on dirt, rock, ledge and are comfortable with steep grades and off-camber. They are able to read the upcoming terrain and purposely ‘pick a line’ to get past the obstacles while controlling their speed and technique. Familiar with their vehicles options (i.e. lockers, sway bar disconnects, downhill assist, etc.) and experienced using them. Familiar with recovery gear but not necessarily trained and experienced in its proper use and best practices for safety.

(Level 4) Proficient – Comfortable driving on challenging terrain and maintaining control using technique. Usually able to drive past obstacles without a spotter. Knows their vehicles limits and how to mitigate risks of vehicle damage & personal injury. Not worried about getting stuck because they are experienced with safe recovery techniques and understand/practice the hierarchy of vehicle recovery.

Venue for Expert Level – Since 2014, Team NORA has worked with major automobile manufacturers, vehicle outfitter & accessories companies to run events, competitions and various off-road related activities.  Contact us for more information.
